Book VI on «Sanctions in the Church» of the 1983 Code of Canon Law went through a major reform, which was promulgated by Pope Francis through his Apostolic Constitution Pascite gregem Dei on 23 May 2021.

The Code of Canon Law (1983) is divided into seven Books, as follows: 

  1. General norms: Ecclesiastical laws, Customs, Decrees and instructions, Singular administrative acts, Juridic acts, Power of governance, Ecclesiastical offices, Prescriptions, Computation of time.
  2. The people of God: The Christian faithful, The Hierarchical constitution of the Church, Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life.
  3. The teaching office of the Church: The minister of the Divine Word, Missionary action of the Church, Catholic education, Instruments of social communications, The profession of the faith.
  4. The sanctifying office of the Church: The sacraments, The acts of divine cult, Sacred places and times.
  5. Temporal Goods: Acquisition of goods, Administration of goods, Contracts and alienations, Pious wills and pious foundations. 
  6. Sanctions in the Church: Delicts and punishments in general, Individual delicts and the penalties constituted for them. 
  7. Processes: The trials in general, The contentious trials, Certain special processes, The penal processes, The mode of proceeding in administrative recourse and in the removal or transfer of parish priests.
